Sweatcoin – get paid for your outdoor adventures | Backcountry Petite

January 26, 2019

I just discovered this great new app!  Have you heard of Sweatcoin?  In the midst of the popularity of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, comes a new currency called Sweatcoin.  Essentially, when you have the app, it uses your phones data to identify the amount of steps you’re taking outdoors each day.  It then converts your outdoor steps into Sweatcoins.  You can trade in your Sweatcoins for various gifts or other currencies like Paypal cash.

How much can I make?

Of course, you’re not going to get rich from using Sweatcoin.  For every 1,000 steps (which they determine from an algorithm, phone data, and GPS), you get 0.95 Sweatcoins (1.00 – 5% commission).  These add up!  For example, my phone tells me that as a NYC-er, I get easily over 10,000 steps per day.  Sweatcoin may determine that 8,000 are valid steps (outdoors and whatever else their algorithm uses).  This then converts into 0.95×8=7.6 Sweatcoins.  Once I’ve accumulated enough Sweatcoins, I can trade them in!  My screen capture below shows some of the current offers available today.  These change on a regular basis!

Sweatcoin Membership

The standard version of Sweatcoin allows you to earn up to 5 Sweatcoins (SC) per day.  There are other levels of membership, however, that have higher caps on earnings.  To start, you can try a higher membership for free for 30 days.  After 30 days, you can decide if it seems worth it to keep the upgraded membership.  The options are as follow:

  • Shaker: 4.75 SC/month.  Earn up to 10 SC/day.
  • Quaker: 20.00 SC/month.  Earn up to 15 SC/day.
  • Breaker: 30.00 SC/month.  Earn up to 20 SC/day.
  • Trouble Maker: Coming soon.

As you can see, I am on the free 30 day trial for a Quaker membership.  Since I usually have about 15,000 steps per day, I would rather be able to build up as many SC as I can, even if all 15,000 steps aren’t counted through the algorithm.  After the end of the month, I will re-evaluate to see if it’s worth trading 20 SC/month to accumulate more.  I have a feeling I’ll be opting for the Shaker membership.

Things to Note

  • Only outdoor steps are counted (supposedly).
  • The app will need to be open so you may see your battery drain a little more than normal.
  • It is automatically on a “battery saver” mode and may not count a few of your steps because of this mode (you can turn it off).

Hopefully this app helps people get outdoors more!  Sometimes people are motivated just by little things and an app like this could help start someone’s new interest in exploring the outdoors!  It couldn’t hurt, right?
